Bellevue School District Gifted Program
Bellevue School District’s Gifted programs expand Bellevue’s rigorous curriculum to serve students of exceptionally high intellectual ability. The following programs are designed to
enrich and challenge the thinking of students with a greater capacity and need
for learning:
Kindergarten & 1st Grade Gifted Services
Kindergarten and First grade students identified as most highly capable receive services in their home school. This is NOT a self-contained classroom like our current Self-Contained Services - Elementary program. K-1 Services provide enhanced or extended learning opportunities in the regular classroom through a menu of options developed to meet students’ needs.
Differentiated Services [Grades 2-12]
Gifted services provided at a neighborhood school or choice school are designed to meet the student’s academic strengths and social/emotional needs in the general education classroom. Through differentiation, teachers utilize various instructional practices which may include accelerating, extending or compacting the curriculum as well as altering the content, process and/or product in response to a student’s needs.
Self-Contained Services - Elementary [previously Gifted Elementary School Program (GESP)] [Grades 2-5]
The Self-Contained Services - Elementary program provides full day services to identified gifted students who are provided opportunities to engage in intellectually stimulating endeavors with peers who are equally capable of learning at comparable levels.
Self-Contained Services - Middle [Gifted Middle School Program (GMSP)]
In the Self-Contained Services - Middle school program, students will receive academic services in Language Arts/Social Studies, Math, and Science as a cohort from teachers trained in and familiar with the needs of gifted students. The SCS-M Language Arts/Social Studies curriculum emphasizes and integrates the use of critical thinking skills in receptive and expressive abilities through the study of various cultural, historic, economic, geographic, and literary perspectives.
Gifted High School Program (GHSP)
In the Self-Contained Services - High School program, students of exceptionally high academic and intellectual ability are grouped in a cohort in the core areas of English, history, science and math. Placement in each area is based on knowledge and skill level. In grades 10 & 11 students enroll in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program with the goal that they complete IB degrees at the end of the 11th grade The 12th grade curriculum includes internships, independent studies, research projects and college classes.
The Bellevue School District Self-Contained Services - High school program is the final piece in the Bellevue School District 2-12 gifted program. SCS-H was formed with the intention of providing a four-year high school experience that allows students with exceptionally high academic ability to be appropriately challenged while maintaining a balanced extra-curricular life.
