Interlake High School Course Planning – A Primer on Art and CTE requirements for 8th graders
If your student is entering Interlake HS with the intent of completing the Advanced Learning (AL) (formally Gifted Programs) IB (International Baccalaureate) program, consider carefully elective choices in 9th grade. All students must complete at least two semesters of Fine Arts (music, drama, visual art) credit and two semesters of Career & Technical Education (CTE) credit by graduation. Note that the course catalog indicates four semesters of Fine Arts needed, but that up to two semesters can be replaced via the Personalized Pathway Requirement, which allows students to write why other courses are more valuable to them for their chosen ambitions. One semester = 0.5 credits.
As part of the AL IB program, most students will do an internship in their senior year as a portion of their school day, which will count for two semesters of CTE credits. The IB program in 10th and 11th grades has two semesters each available for the Arts: music (must be in band, orchestra, choir), and visual art or film. Alternatively, these semesters can also be filled with business (the one CTE option), or additional world language or science (both of these on top of first world language and core science), or selected IB electives. Taking any of these electives as part of the IB program means taking an IB exam in the subject area. In 11th grade there is an additional semester open for any elective.
There are a number of (non-IB) courses which can be counted as either Fine Arts or CTE, which is especially useful for students having difficulty finding Fine Arts courses of interest who do not want to fulfill the Fine Arts requirement with IB courses. These students should consider requesting Fine Arts/CTE courses in their freshman year to ensure that they have time to fulfill the graduation requirements (remembering that the senior internship will also count toward 2 CTE credits). Some colleges require or strongly prefer that students take the same Art class over two semesters (i.e. Ceremics 1 and Ceremics 2). Washington State requires two years of Art, but a student can make that 1 year by declaring a personal pathway. Art and CTE courses are listed on student course selection sheets.
* A student cannot take AL classes at Interlake unless he/she is enrolled in the centered AL program.
* A student cannot remain enrolled at Interlake HS outside of the AL program unless 1. Interlake is his/her neighborhood school or 2. He/she obtains permission through the open enrollment or transfer request process.
Open enrollment closed for 2020-2021 on January 24, 2020. Transfer Requests can be made at any time, but all approvals are based upon space available.

World Language: If your child plans to attend the centered AL program at Interlake High School and wishes to take the HL (high level) track for a World Language, then he/she needs to complete World Language 2 by the end of 8th grade. For most students, this means starting World Language 1A in 6th grade.
Math: All incoming 6th graders in the middle school AL centered program will be enrolled in IMT2 (or higher if previously qualified), without need for further testing or summer school. Those who are skipping IMT1 will receive access to the online IMT1 course from the Advanced Learning office in June to review the content over the summer.
Attention high school students in “Advanced Learning in neighborhood/choice school”
Students who leave the AL (formerly gifted) program after 8th grade to attend their home/neighborhood school in the “AL in the home/neighborhood school” program generally take all 10th grade core classes in 9th grade. This opens up many opportunities for classes their senior year. “Advanced Studies in English,” the course offered to AL students at Interlake during 12th grade, has been rolled out to all high schools with students in need of the course. This course is designed for seniors who have completed AP Literature and Composition or Senior English by the end of 11th grade. "Further Mathematics" is offered at Bellevue and Newport High School and is designed for students who have completed Advanced Calculus. Based upon enrollment numbers, Further Mathematics may be offered only on one campus with students from the other campus included.
